Part of his work also examines how climate change shapes and is shaped by outdoor recreation, from high-alpine terrain to coastal waters. Drawing on a background in mountain sports and expedition experience, Mitch has filmed surfing along the Chilean coastline, technical skiing and climbing in the Tetons, and remote bikepacking expeditions across diverse landscapes. He is currently pursuing an MFA in Science and Natural History Filmmaking at Montana State University, training toward his AMGA Ski Guide Certification, and practicing the art of adequate surfing.
Artist Statement
My filmmaking sits at the intersection of people, place, and purpose, rooted in cinéma vérité and cinematic visual language. I’m drawn to stories that are closely tied to mountain and ocean environments; mountain communities, fisherfolk, and adventure athletes; especially where climate change and shifting economies are reshaping those relationships. I favor natural light, intimate camera observation, and carefully composed frames that let moments breathe.
I chase the quiet and revealing part of the story. I listen for the small, everyday moments that reveal a life: a climber packing ropes at dawn, a quiet conversation with a ski guide in a backcountry hut, a routine choice that signals a community’s future. These moments open onto larger ecological and social dynamics. Sport and adventure act as entry points, not the focus themselves, but ways to access histories, livelihoods, and values without flattening complex lives into spectacle. My goal is to make films that are part of a lived experience, invite sustained empathy, and inspire care for the places people call home.
As I continue to refine my craft, a constant in my work that always remains is using both cinematography and color design to intentionally drive the stories I tell. These are vehicles for me to bring to life intimate stories about people and place.
